  3.

  4. A person has to be at a point when they are ready to seek help with their addiction. It is not until then can a counselor help them find other coping mechanisms. I believe that addictions have an underlying component to them and getting down to the core of the problem can help understand the addiction and then work on a treatment plan with the client. I do not work with individuals who abuse substances. I refer them to a drug/alcohol counselor of treatment center.

What relationship exists between mental health and substance abuse? What services do you provide for someone suffering with either and/or both?

We often don’t know if a person uses substances because they are curious or if they are addicted. We don’t know if they use drugs because they have mental health issues. Safe Babies, Safe Moms case managers can help direct the client to the appropriate services. The case managers can be an advocate for the client when she feels the most vulnerable.

We also offer parent management training and social skills training.  I personally offer clinical services for teenagers and adults, as well as consulting services for organizations.

What issues do you specify treatment for?

What therapy modalities do you use in your practice?

We use a variety of modalities with our clients, depending on their treatment goals and what they need, as well as the orientation of the provider that they are seeing. Some of types of therapy that we offer include: Cognitive, Behavioral, Interpersonal, Reality, Humanistic / Existential, & Psychodynamic. Personally, I tend to use a combination of therapy types, based on the needs and wishes of the client, and informed by what treatments tend to be most effective for certain issues.

When should one seek mental health treatment?

When something in their life (their way of thinking, their relationships, their behavior, or choices) is causing an issue that they might need some external support dealing with, or when identifying the source of an issue and alternative ways of handling it seems like it may require a different perspective.

Why should someone choose to come to your practice?

Because we do our best to meet the individual and unique needs of each client in an ethical and highly competent way. We offer professional, excellent service, and each of our practitioners is highly trained in the areas in which they work and offer treatment or service.

What relationship exists between mental health and substance abuse? What services do you provide for someone suffering with either and/or both?

The relationship is usually significant and complicated between mental health (or health in general) and substance use issues. We offer some out-patient addiction recovery services for individuals and families which focus on developing and maintaining  personal growth (towards becoming the best, fully-functioning version of yourself) away from substance use. Our primary modality for this is individual therapy, but we do offer some family services as well. Substance use treatment is also focused in two ways- one on decreasing, ending, or maintaining abstinence from the use behaviors, and two, on uncovering and healing any internal or more deeply rooted causes for ongoing use or initial use.
