What relationship exists between mental health and substance abuse? What services do you provide for someone suffering with either and/or both?

We see mental health and substance abuse as intricately entwined--generally, one begins abusing substances to cope with and/or avoid mental issues and pain.  Therefore, the treatment of one must also involve the treatment of the other. Otherwise, the risk of relapse is greater for the substance abuse, and the mental health issues cannot be resolved while substance abuse continues.

While we are not CDPs, we do offer assessment and referral for substance abuse. I also personally work with people who have undergone initial CD treatment and wish to continue receiving sober support. I am very knowledgeable about substance abuse, AA, CD treatment options and progression. We also offer mindfulness training, CBT interventions, EFT (Emotion Freedom Technique) , EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), which have all been shown to be helpful in maintaining sobriety and resolving mental health issues.

What therapy modalities do you use in your practice?

I use Jungian Psychoanalytic approach; exploring the unconscious and archetypes. Some sessions include dream interpretation, too.

I am also adept in teaching Nonviolent Communication founded by Marshall Rosenberg to teach useful communication skills.

When should one seek mental health treatment?

One doesn't have to be mentally ill or going through a troubled time to seek counseling with me. The Jungian approach includes detailed self analysis to explore and deepen self knowledge.

Why should someone choose to come to your practice?

Though many cognitive and practical skills and strategies may meet the short term goals, some of personal and interpersonal issues may reveal much deeper repressed contents that need to be integrated into consciousness to achieve more wholeness in life. I can help those who are needing deep work to get to the bottom of their issues.

What types of services do you offer?

I am currently available to do drug/alcohol assessments (with urinalysis) for adolescents and young adults.  I work with parents whose kids are using substances and am in the process of forming a group for this population. I am available to work with those in recovery or working toward recovery. I also provide community trainings "Understanding Adolescent Substance Abuse".

What issues do you specify treatment for?

I believe that if a person's life has been affected by substance abuse, my role is to help them explore their choices. They may not see it as a problem, however loved ones may see it as a problem.

What therapy modalities do you use in your practice?

I use tools from CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), DBT (Dialect Behavior Therapy) and Motivational Interviewing

When should one seek treatment?

When people (or those around them) are affected by substance abuse, it is a problem.  Often (with adolescents) it is the parents who bring kids in for services. For young adults, it is often because they want a better quality of life and lack the skills and tools to know how to improve their life.

Why should someone choose to come to your practice?

I work with people in a field that is often surrounded with shame and judgment. I believe my willingness to be sensitive to those issues is paramount in providing a safe environment for clients who disclose challenges in their life. My passion is to provide services and support to those affected by substance abuse is apparent to all that I meet. I have often been asked to do TV, radio and newspaper interviews to help others understand substance abuse.

What relationship exists between mental health and substance abuse? What services do you provide for someone suffering with either and/or both?

In my agency, I was the first to acknowledge and bring attention to co-occurring disorders. Specifically, 20 years ago, I recognized the correlation between ADHD and substance abuse and began to realize that mental health and substance abuse often go hand in hand.  When I feel that a referral is needed for mental health treatment, I am fortunate to have many colleagues to consult with or refer to.  The group that I work with also has a physician / therapist that I refer to when medication management is needed.

I am also part of DBT Eastside, a group of therapist who have been intensively training to provide DBT counseling and skills groups.
