Drug addiction among young people and teens is becoming an increasingly huge problem for Jamaica Plain. According to recent surveys done, on the 18 – 25 age groups, the drug abuse addiction rate had risen to 14.1% when compared to five years ago. About 12.5% of these addicts used cocaine to get “high” while another 32.4% chose to abuse prescription drugs. Some of the addicts started out using prescription drugs for pain relief but this eventually turned into an addiction as the doses were increased to ensure the “highs” were longer and more intense. Some research showed that people are more likely to become dependent on drugs when they are experiencing certain negative mental conditions in their life. Some of these conditions would include depression, bipolar disorder, mental stress and other conditions like low self esteem. Jamaica Plain drug problems clearly shows, young people seem to turn to drugs more easily when they are looking for a way out of their problems. Based on information gathered from Jamaica Plain drug admissions, there is clear data that shows only a small percentage addicts – 27.3%, are seeking help to beat the addiction on their own. Most of the addicts on record were forced to seek treatment or face jail time.
