2015 Drug Trends in South Dakota

2015 Drug Trends in South Dakota

South Dakota is a beautiful and relatively peaceful state, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t come without its own set of issues. Drug issues do run rampant, especially in the more populated areas of the state, and because of that, it’s important that we take a look at and understand those problems. In South Dakota, the biggest issues are drug use and abuse by minors (specifically, by teenagers), and the mixing, distribution, and use of methamphetamine. Let’s take a look at these two issues in a little more detail.

Teen Drug Use and Abuse

Teen drug use and abuse is a problem throughout the United States, but one of the states that have been affected the most is South Dakota. Even though the types of drugs that are used by teens varies depending on their age and the area and environment in which they live, there are two big substances that are abused the most by teens: marijuana and alcohol.

Underage drinking is a huge problem all over the United States, but it seems that South Dakota is one of the states that is most affected. Underage drinking arrests are some of the highest in the entire nation, and there are more issues related to teenagers and alcohol than ever before. DUI’s are also incredibly common among adolescents. The state has taken a very assertive view on the entire issue of underage drinking and has also worked to help educate teenagers who may be looking to use alcohol inappropriately. There are also rehab programs which have been developed for students as well, which helps to encourage those teenagers to get the help they need if they are starting to have some major issues with the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Another huge teenage issue in South Dakota is marijuana. Like underage drinking, this is a problem that has become quite common all over the United States as well. This is especially true because it’s easier than ever to access pot, no matter how old you are. There are a lot of risks associated with using marijuana at such a young age, including the harm of your brain chemistry and issues related to memory and learning. Because of these issues, the South Dakota government has also started to apply the proper procedures in order to help teenagers avoid using marijuana and other mind-altering substances as well.

Methamphetamine

Out of all of the illegal drugs that are found and used throughout the state of South Dakota, meth seems to be one of the biggest issues for residents of the state. Even though a number of people are trying to quit meth, more and more people are getting involved in using meth every single day. South Dakota residents have a lot of easy access to it, and there are a variety of meth labs that are operating throughout the state (some have been closed down, the state is working to close others).

Due to the proximity of the state to Iowa and a number of other meth hubs, and because of the high number of immigrants from Latin American countries that specialize in making meth, access to the drug is still easier than ever. Another sign of these issues is the fact that those who run meth labs are stealing fertilizer and other supplies from some of the many farms in South Dakota so that they can make their meth at a lower price than they would have if they had to buy all of the supplies themselves.

The number of meth-related deaths continue to rise, and on top of that, there is more meth that is seized every year than all of the other types of drugs combined. South Dakota is also a distribution area for meth as well – the major highways that cut through the state make it easier for those involved in drug trafficking to go through the state and into other states around it (North Dakota, etc). This is yet another reason why the meth problem has gotten to the levels that they are at right now.

So, as you can see, meth and teen drug abuse are both huge problems in South Dakota. Legislators have been working to try and prevent them from becoming even worse issues, but the issues still remain. As time goes on, South Dakota will likely follow in the footsteps of other states that have started to crack down on those who are in the drug-making industry.
