For many people in the United States, Marijuana is the drug of choice. People think that marijuana is a safe drug and that it is not addictive. However, Marijuana is addictive and over 150,000 people a year develop a dependency to it. Many people develop what is thought to be a compulsive addiction to marijuana. This addiction is characterized by increased tolerance to THC, inability to cut back on the amount used, excessive time spent using the drug, and reclusiveness. Research has shown that marijuana is an emotionally and mentally addictive drug. Over time, people begin to believe that marijuana is the answer to their problems.

Currently, New Mexico is ranked at number 37 in the nation for marijuana arrests. Despite the efforts that have been taken to inform the public about the addictiveness of this drug, the public still feels that it is harmless. Currently, support for those who do show that do develop a dependency to marijuana is limited to counseling and addiction support. Many people who do not receive treatment for their addiction to marijuana, will develop addictions to other drugs over time. This is why marijuana is considered the gateway drug of choice.
