3. What can one expect to gain from therapy?

I believe we hold answers within us that can be discovered and furthered through the therapy relationship. Every person needs to be seen and heard. We also need the time set aside to focus on what really matters to us and sometimes what brings us pain or holds us back. Rather than ignore it any longer, beginning therapy is taking the first step toward giving more attention to your own life.

What types of services do you offer? What issues do you specify treatment for?

I offer individual and couples therapy for adults. I have received years of advanced post-doctoral training for treating addictions. I help people work through the recovery process utilizing healing methods from Eastern and Western Psychology. Resolving struggles surrounding identity, meaning, values, and other existential themes especially as it pertains to addictions are my specialty.

What therapy modalities do you use in your practices?

I implement both abstinence and harm reduction models to treating addictions. I implement more than 20 years of training in Buddhism in addition to more than 10 years of training in cutting edge treatments from modern psychology, particularly Gendlin's Focusing and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

When should one seek treatment?

One should seek treatment when they want to change. The desire to change can range from simply seeking support in order to make a more smooth transition from one chapter of one's life to another, to being at a total loss and overwhelmed after having tried countless times and failed at making a desired change. Therapy is appropriate at any stage as long as the individual is able to access a part of themselves that wants to change.

Why should someone choose to come to your practice?

I have had an exceptional doctoral education through scientifically rigorous and progressive training programs approved by the American Psychological Association. In addition, I have more than twenty years of training in meditation within the Buddhist tradition. To this end I have developed a unique set of honed skills from both the West and the East that have stood the test of scientific efficacy and ancient wisdom.

What relationship exists between mental health and substance abuse? What services do you provide for someone suffering with either and/or both?

Addictions stem from conscious and unconscious feelings of helplessness. One of the hallmarks of addiction involve failed attempt at managing the compulsion on one's own. To this end a healing relationship that corrects those conscious and unconscious feelings of helpless lays the path for recovery. I provide a safe and supportive environment where people can process arenas of their minds that they have either avoided or not known been conscious of. I support and guide clients to clarify and commit to their values while developing the courage and strength to accept the obstacles and difficulties that they may encounter along the path.

What types of services do you offer?

I offer individual, couples and family therapy in my office in San Mateo, CA.

What issues do you specify treatment for?

My areas of specialty are relationships, co-dependancy and substance abuse. However I work with individuals, couples and families with a variety of other challenging life situations as well.

What therapy modalities do you use in your practice?

I use several different modalities to help people with their challenges. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a very useful tool for working with addiction, anxiety and depression. I also use humanistic and attachment therapy to understand patterns of attachment and relationships that you have created from childhood and are carrying on in to your adult life.

When should one seek treatment?

Everyone seeks treatment at a different stage in their lives. Sometimes clients come to me after reaching a breaking point in their lives or relationships, but other times they come to seek help in figuring out how they can be the best and happiest they can be. People come to therapy at all walks of life, and there is no right or wrong time to come and seek help.

Why should someone choose to come to your practice?

I have a very warm and authentic way of working with clients. I am truly and genuinely interested in seeing you reach your potential and will be with you along the way as you get to the place you need to go.

What relationship exists between mental health and substance abuse? What services do you provide for someone suffering with either and/or both?

When someone is struggling with both mental health and substance abuse the term “Dual Diagnosis is used”. Its sometimes hard to determine which preceded the other. Anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and PTSD are some of the common conditions that clients have lived with for long periods of their lives without any help or diagnosis. Substances often bring temporary relief to these very unpleasant and painful conditions and that is where substance abuse can get started. I will work with you to assess your substance use/abuse and uncover underlying issues and mental health conditions that you have been living with.
