How do You Stay Sober?

How do You Stay Sober?

December 29th, 2014

Going to a treatment center will help you get sober, but how do you stay sober? For a lot of people who used drugs to help deal with the stress of their lives, the drugs may have gone away, but the stress is still there. You can’t always change everything to get away from groups of people that you used to do drugs with either. Making sure that you know what to do to stay sober is one of the most important parts of what you will learn while you are in a drug treatment program.

Creating the habits of a sober life

Once you have gone through the process of detoxing, the rest of treatment is focused on creating the habits and skills necessary to living a sober life. There are many techniques for stress reduction and anger management to learn, plus ways you can handle cravings and peer pressure.

The thing is, you can’t just learn these things once in a treatment center, you have to also learn how to practice them on a daily basis and where you can go once you are out of treatment to stay in a group of supportive persons that will help you keep learning how to do these things, and how to grow in your skills too.

After treatment options

For some people joining a support group will be what they need to stay sober and keep learning how to handle the different stressors that happen in life without going back to drugs. There are a variety of 12-step program, and groups that are very different from 12-step programs to help do this. There are also specialized counselors and therapists who can become part of your support team too. All of these groups help to keep you in a peer setting where sobriety has a priority.
